Innovative start-ups helped less
Prominent players in WA’s innovation sector acknowledge the need for start-ups to be sustainable, but have urged continued state support.
Dr Marcus Tan is a medical entrepreneur, investor and company director actively involved in Perth’s tech startup ecosystem. He has over 20 years of clinical and commercial experience, holding senior management positions in startup and public-listed organisations.
Dr Tan joined HealthEngine in 2009, taking over the business as chief executive and turning the website into one of the largest Australian online consumer health sites, allowing anyone to book a doctor’s appointment as easily as booking accommodation. He stepped away from the company at the end of June 2023.
Dr Tan is the founder & executive chair of Wellspring Group which offers consulting, investing and philanthropic services aimed at inspiring, empowering and creating a better world in the key priority areas of health, economic empowerment and education. He is also an entrepreneur-in-residence at early-stage venture capital fund BetterLabs, partner at Purpose Ventures, chair of Spacecubed, and non-executive director of Kitchen Warehouse.
He had previously served on various councils and boards including the Australian Medical Association (WA), the Governing Council of WA South Metropolitan Health Service, and GivingWest.
Dr Tan is a UWA medical graduate with an executive MBA from the Australian Graduate School of Management, and a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
