Michael Piu’s transition to a non-profit organisation followed years in the corporate arena as a lawyer. He worked for a high profile law firm before starting his own successful practice, after moving from Melbourne to Perth. With an aim for making a difference, he moved to an acting executive officer role at a brain injury organisation before joining St Patrick’s Community Support Centre. There, he developed systems and procedures to ensure financial sustainability to help double the organisation’s budget and increase its existing capacity to assist the disadvantaged.
In 2013, Mr Piu received a 40Under40 Award for his work with St Patrick’s and the South West Metropolitan Partnership Forum. As chair of the South West Metropolitan Partnership Forum, he has also received the Institute of Public Administration Australia (WA) Achievement Awards for Innovation in the not-for-profit sector and the Best Practice Collaboration Between Government and Non-Government Organisations awards.
