Law Society #LawMatters: The Law Society Brings Design Thinking to the Legal Profession
The Law Society is embracing design thinking as part of our core professional education offering in 2019.
Dr Andrew Lu AM OAM was a partner of HBA Legal and led its health law practice from July 2018 to December 2022. He has substantial experience representing the insurance industry, health practitioners, and government on contentious matters.
Dr Lu began practice as a commercial insurance litigator with Freehills and, for 9 years, managed general liability, financial lines and professional indemnity disputes as a senior member of the insurance and risk team of MinterEllison where he also developed a special interest in medical negligence, before becoming a partner of Jarman McKenna.
Dr Lu has conducted administrative law litigation, mediated vocational and commercial matters to early resolution, and advised Government and corporate clients on contractual disputes, the conflict of laws, and tortious claims.
He holds masters and doctoral degrees in Law and is a Fellow of the Australian and New Zealand Institute of Insurance and Finance.
Dr Lu promotes good governance in the Arts with his involvement as a non-executive director of the National Gallery of Australia Foundation, the Arts Law Centre of Australia, the Australian Youth Orchestra, and the Melbourne International Film Festival. He has also been president of The Mental Health Tribunal since December 2022, and a non executive director of broadcaster SBS Australia since February 2023.
Dr Lu is listed as a pre-eminent medical defence lawyer in Doyle’s Guide, and won a 40Under40 Award in 2017 for professional services and pro-bono work.
In 2008, Dr Lu was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia for major service to the arts. In 2021, he was awarded a Member of the Order of Australia for significant service to the visual and performing arts, to the law, and to legal education.

Andrew Lu and Kathryn Roach have joined Jarman McKenna as special counsel.Paul Graham and Maree Ferguson have been promoted to special counsel, Eve Andrews, Ben Coppin and Colby Treasure to senior associates, and Rosena De Freitas, Joanne Clarke and Victoria Branson to associates.
Insurance litigation firm Jarman McKenna has joined hands with Paul Graham and Andrew Lu. Both the new partners had joined the firm in the year 2012. Mr Graham worked at Sparke Helmore Lawyers prior to joining the firm while Dr Lu worked at Minter Ellison.
Gumala Aboriginal Corporation executive officer Jahna Cedar has been named the 2017 Business News 40under40 First Amongst Equals, taking the top honour ahead an impressive field of Western Australia’s young business and community leaders.
Former Artrage chief executive Marcus Canning and Fortescue deputy chief executive Julie Shuttleworth were among the Western Australians recognised by the 2021 Queen’s Birthday Honours.
