Majors hurt margins
The growing dominance of the major supermarket chains has had a significant effect on Western Australian food producers.
After the success of Leanne Wesche’s first business, The Sprout Factory, Leanne was approached by Coles with a proposal to establish a fruit and vegetable packaging facility. A year later, in 2004 Leanne launched Pacco Group, the only fruit and vegetable packing house capable of packaging more than 100 different varieties under one roof. Since establishing Pacco Group’s initial operations, Leanne has grown the business from a nine square metre room, 12 staff and no income, to 46 employees and an annual turnover exceeding $5 million.
