2006 40under40 winner pharmacist Greg Hunt introduced a new concept in retail pharmacy to Western Australia, with four Greg’s Discount Chemist stores across Perth offering the public large and permanent discounts on products, with a larger range and retail space than most.
After graduating from university in 1994, Mr Hunt trained in retail and hospital pharmacy to secure an MPS certification, which required 2,000 hours of retail work. It was during his time running a pharmacy business in Victoria that he first started the planning for what would eventually become Greg’s Discount Chemist. He made the decision in 2003 to create a new branded discount chain for WA and spent the next year seeking appropriate locations. His first store opened in mid 2005 and was an immediate success. Research within his stores has since found that people are prepared to drive up to 30 kilometres to access discounts, and there is even demand for a delivery service. It us understood he sold out in 2009.
Mr Hunt later became a director of private clinics group Apollo Health, which sold to St John Ambulance for about $23 million in 2016.
