Pharmacists rue corporate threat
The head of a leading pharmacy chain has warned the sector would fracture if it were deregulated, as proposed in the federal government’s recent Commission of Audit report.
Pharmacy 777’s original owner, Ken Hurst (later mayor of the City of Melville), opened the first store at 777 Canning Highway – the address that lends its name to today’s family of stores.
In 1968 he took on Michael Dillon as a partner and the original store expanded, and then was replicated elsewhere as more partners joined the business - Greg MacKenzie in 1985, David Speak (1989) and Kim Brotherson (1992).
In 2019 the company expanded through a partnership with HBF, with 31 Friendlies pharmacies transferred the the Pharmacy 777 brand.
