Tim Marney has over 30 years of experience in economics, finance, public policy and administration, health and human services.
Mr Marney joined Nous Group as a principal in July 2019 and was appointed chief economist in May 2021. He left Nous Group in January 2023. In April 2023, Mr Marney joined the Department of Justice where he was appointed by the government to implement a newly developed model of care for young people at Banksia Hill Detention Centre, giving detainees the care and services they need, focusing on rehabilitation and reducing reoffending behaviour through a trauma-informed & therapeutic approach, in turn enabling the safety of all staff at the centre. In July 2023, Mr Marney became the chief economist at the Chamber of Minerals and Energy of Western Australia. In February 2024, he was appointed as the WA state government's Coordinator General, with a focus on reforming the environmental approvals process and expediting major projects.
Mr Marney also has over 2 decades of experience in senior executive roles. He spent five years as commissioner of the Mental Health Commission and prior to that, he was head of the Western Australian Treasury and oversaw the delivery of 10 surplus budgets and numerous public sector reform initiatives. Mr Marney also served as Under Treasurer, chair of the Western Australian Treasury Corporation, and executive director & policy advisor within the state Treasury, after starting his career in economic analysis and forecasting with the Reserve Bank of Australia.
In June 2020, Mr Marney was appointed by the Morrison government to help lead its efforts to regrow jobs lost during the COVID-19 pandemic. He was deputy chair of five industrial relations working group with an aim to tackling known problems within the IR system which inhibit job growth and creation.
Mr Marney chairs the Bankwest Curtin Economics Centre advisory board and Richmond Wellbeing, is a board member of Reconciliation WA, and chair of Short Back and Sidewalks which provides free haircuts & grooming services to people experiencing homelessness in Perth. He was also deputy chair of Beyond Blue, where he has been a board member for over 11.5 years.
Mr Marney holds a Bachelor of Economics (Honours) from Murdoch University, and is a Fellow of Certified Practising Accountants Australia.
