Ian Burston AM spent five decades in the mining and resources industry as a senior executive and company director.
His senior executive roles included being the head of Rio Tinto’s iron ore arm (Hamersley Iron) and managing director of ASX-listed iron ore miners Portman and Aztec Resources. His career included the development of several multi-million tonnes per year iron ore export operations. He held numerous board roles at ASX companies including at Fortescue Metals Group and Mincor Resources, and chaired NRW Holdings and Imdex.
Dr Burston had also held roles in industry associations and local government and was awarded Citizen of the Year (Industry and Commerce) in 1992, Member of the Order of Australia in 1993, and Honorary Doctor of Science from Curtin University in 1995.
He was a Fellow of the Institute of Engineers of Australia, the Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, and the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
Dr Burston passed away on 14 August 2022, aged 87 years.
