Community leaders relish competitive environment
Western Australia’s five universities have always faced unique challenges.
Erica Smyth AC has over 45 years of experience as a geologist, senior mining executive and company director within the mineral and petroleum industries.
She was principal geologist of BHP Minerals, project manager of BHP-Utah Minerals International’s Beenup Project, manager of gas market development WA at BHP Petroleum, and general manager of corporate affairs with Woodside Petroleum.
Ms Smyth was awarded a Honorary Doctor of Letters from the University of Western Australia in 2008, the Chamber of Mines & Energy Western Australia awarded her a Lifetime Achievement Award for her contribution to the industry as part of the Women in Resources Awards in 2010, and she was the winner in the Business Award category of the 2019 Western Australian Of The Year Awards.
In 2018, Ms Smyth was awarded a Companion of the Order of Australia for eminent services to the community through corporate governance roles with charitable, medical research, higher education, nuclear scientific and technology organisations, to the minerals exploration sector, and to women in business.
