$155m Kwinana battery confirmed

NHOA Australia has won a $155 million contract to install a battery in Kwinana for Synergy, the state government has confirmed.

Earlier this month, Business News revealed NHOA (formerly known as Engie EPS) would build a battery in WA, with GenusPlus Group to undertake engineering, procurement and construction work.

Construction of a 100 megawatt, 200 megawatt hour battery will start next month, and it is expected it will be operational by late 2022.

Synergy's battery in Kwinana is one of a handful proposed in Western Australia, with Alinta planning battery storage in Wagerup and South Hedland.

The Commonwealth government granted $15 million to the project, which will help ease the pressure on the power grid from high rooftop solar during the day.

Premier Mark McGowan said the state government had committed $140 million to the battery. 

"This battery is crucial to WA's sustainable energy future and a key part of the Distributed Energy Resources Roadmap,” Mr McGowan said. 

"There is a rapid energy transformation happening and energy storage systems such as this battery will play a key role in providing better energy outcomes for Western Australian households and businesses."
