Business rises in power balance shift
Plenty has shifted in Business News’ annual look at WA’s 50 most influential figures, with changes starting at the top of the list.
Reece Whitby has been a Labor Party Member of the WA Legislative Assembly for Baldivis since 2017.
Shortly after Labor's win in the 2017 state election, he became Parliamentary Secretary to the Treasurer and the Minister for Energy & Finance; and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Environment and Disability Services, under the McGowan government. Following the 2021 state election, he became the Minister for Emergency Services, Racing and Gaming, Small Business, and Volunteering. In the December 2021 cabinet reshuffle, Mr Whitby became the Minister for Environment and Climate Action. He picked up the Racing & Gaming portfolio in the 2022 cabinet reshuffle, which was replaced with the Energy portfolio in December 2023.
Following the resignation of Mr McGowan in June 2023, Mr Whitby kept the same portfolios as Minister for the Environment, Climate Action, Racing and Gaming under the Cook government.
Prior to politics, Mr Whitby was a journalist with Seven Network, Nine Network and the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. He was also a newsreader and senior reporter at Channel Seven, and the chief communications advisor at the Office of the Leader of the Opposition.
