Major Holdings has its origins in Geraldton where William Young got his start as a car dealer, weathering the Depression, before returning to Perth to establish a partnership with Syd Wheatley. He had two sons in the car business with Peter being the best known both as a car dealer and a collector of art, namely Brett Whitely works. In 1963 Peter married 1961 Miss Australia and 1962 Miss International Beauty contest winner Tania Verstak who still owns the family home, possibly the biggest piece of Dalkeith real estate in private hands. The family business, including Major Motors, is now in the hands of the third generation, led by Grant Young. As well as dealerships, the family has extensive land holdings in strategic areas of Victoria Park, Belmont and other commercial areas, as well as regional centres such as Geraldton and Port Hedland.
