The Insurance Commission is the sole Compulsory Third Party Insurer for motor vehicle personal injuries in Western Australia. It is a statutory corporation, or Government Trading Enterprise, owned by the Government of Western Australia. It has its roots in the Motor Vehicle Insurance Trust established to administer third party insurance in 1949.
The trust merged with other state government insurance businesses to form the State Government Insurance Commission in 1987 but most of the other assets were sold with the privatisation of SGIO in 1994.
It took its current name in 1997.
