Health Insurance Fund of Australia Limited is an Australian public company limited by guarantee providing health insurance to members who reside throughout Australia. HIF is registered with the federal regulator, Private Health Insurance Administration Council as an open access, not-for-profit private health insurer.
The HIF story began back in March 1954, when the organisation sprang into life as the 'Western Australian Government Railways (WAGR) Employees Hospital and Medical Fund' (trips off the tongue, doesn’t it?). One name change and 24 years later, it became 'Health Insurance Fund of WA', an incorporated association under the Associations Incorporations Act 1895 (WA).
Then, in June 2010, it changed its name again to 'Health Insurance Fund of Australia' to reflect its increasingly nationwide client base.
