PERTH-BASED and regional businesses were among those recognised at three different award ceremonies last week.
The Western Australian Meat Marketing Cooperative clinched the 2011 ‘best from the west’ award at the PwC Food and Beverage Industry Awards, for a refit of its Katanning lamb processing plant, which has improved efficiency and returns to producer members.
Other recipients included cool-room builder Jaymak Perth for the best service to industry, Sticky Fingers Gourmet Foods for best food product or achievement, Il Gelato for best retail product, Catalano’s Seafood Secrets for excellence in supply chain, Mrs Mac’s for best marketing, and the Perth Market Authority for environment and sustainability.
The awards were organised by the Food Industry Association of WA and held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel.
Agriculture and Food Minister Terry Redman congratulated the award recipients, saying that the food industry, which directly employs 19,500 people, makes a “vital contribution to the economy and households of Western Australia, allowing consumers to access a wide variety of fresh, locally grown produce.
“These awards highlight our diverse and innovative state food and beverage sector.”
Another food and beverage award ceremony, the 2011 Savour Australia Restaurant & Catering HOSTPLUS Awards for Excellence for the WA metropolitan region, was held last week at Burswood Grand Ballroom, to acknowledge excellence in food and service.
Restaurant Amuse in East Perth was named the region’s top place to dine, while Mustard Catering was named metro WA’s caterer of the year. The Perth Convention Exhibition Centre took the top award for function/convention centre caterer for the sixth consecutive year, and the consumer vote award went to Jetty’s Restaurant in Hillarys.
The winners will now compete with venues from across Australia in the national finals to be held in Sydney later this year.
“WA is home to some of the country’s tourism and dining treasures,” Restaurant & Catering CEO John Hart said.
“The restaurants and caterers reflect the rich use of regional produce making WA unique in comparison to other regions.”
