LEEUWIN Estate’s scenic Margaret River setting could become the location for a high profile sports event to match the reputation it has earned in the arts through hosting its annual concert.
Winery owner Denis Horgan confirmed he had sought the advice of a golf course designer over plans to develop the 650 hectare site, which houses Leeuwin’s vineyards, production facilities and restaurant.
“It is a fantasy,” Mr Horgan said.
“Whether or not it is something that could be a reality, I am not sure.”
Mr Horgan, who also is president of the WA Wine Industry Association, remained coy about the detail, steering clear of speculation that there were plans for an exclusive club for about 200 members with a joining fee well beyond the salaries of even top executives.
But he intimated that Leeuwin’s success in attracting high-calibre performers for its summer concert could be replicated on the golf course.
“You only have to look at what we have done with the concert,” Mr Horgan said. “A world class golf course will bring world class people to the district who appreciate world class wines.”
He said any decision to go ahead would be dependent on the project suiting the Margaret River area.
“It would only be done if it complemented the district, we aren’t selfish about it,” Mr Horgan said.
Leeuwin Estate was started in 1975 as a joint venture between Mr Horgan and his associates and US winemaker Robert Mondavi, who funded a 40 hectare planting.
The US interests sold out four years later.
Leeuwin now has 110 hectares under vine at its main site, a restaurant with cellar door and a concert series which has been running for 17 years.
