State of Kin is a Perth-based multi-disciplinary design studio offering comprehensive architectural, interior design, and construction services to create a vision for your space and make it a reality.
Specialising across residential, hospitality, retail, wellness and commercial sectors, the team approaches every project with unparalleled finesse, energy, and dedication.
They take the art and science of design and break it down into a process of staged phases based on the practical and measurable outcomes of a project.
Passionate about delivering expressive and contemporary spaces, each with a unique identity, the practice focuses on the experience of users within spaces, believing each project is formed from its own nucleus of insight and that design is a fundamental practice that influences and shapes human interaction, understanding, and behaviours.
This allows the team to shape spaces in a way that ensures function, movement, feel and look while maintaining the client’s vision and brief, as well as commercial viability.
A tight-knit team flowing with constantly evolving, dynamic ideas centred around innovation, momentum, excellence and revolution, the team at State of Kin is perpetually immersed in the realm of design with the collective purpose of creating inimitable architecture and interiors.
A family business and the amalgamation of new and old generations, State of Kin Design and State of Kin Construction offer a holistic service encompassing architecture, interiors, project management, construction and styling.
Following the success of their first projects, ‘Brick House’ and ‘Shutter House’, the team at State of Kin continue to showcase their extraordinary talents through new projects across all sectors.
Recently, the team were engaged to breathe new life into one of Perth’s most beloved hair salons, Circles of Hair Subiaco. Known as a vibrant hive of activity; the salon buzzes with energy, colour and a palpably fun dynamic.
After moving into State of Kin’s ‘Shutter House’, owner of Circles, Sharlene Lee, had the ‘absolute confidence to lean on the team to help design and build the new Circles of Hair’ knowing she could trust their vision together with their design and build quality.
The concept for this project was to maintain the fun energy and ambience of the existing space but give it a rejuvenating facelift, reflecting the established brand with a fresh new interpretation.
The newly renovated salon maintains this vivacity but refreshes the look and elevates the space to a truly unique aesthetic that has not yet been seen in Perth.
Layered with shades of pink and red that represent the identity of the Circles brand among metallic tones and pops of electric blue, these moments of colour amongst the layers of silver and grey are used as signifiers and focal points, directing and attracting people to the various zones within the salon.
The result is an avantgarde, stylised ad slick space with cuttingly sharp lines accentuated by sporadic injections of playful colour and gentle, rounded shapes.
The State of Kin design and construction team worked simultaneously on Circles, who Lee refers to as ‘unparalleled’ in the industry not only for the importance placed on the craft and honesty of materials in all their projects, but their regard for their clients.
When renovating Circles, State of Kin made sure to work around the needs of the business, keeping the salon open and operating throughout the building phase and the salon’s busiest time of the year.
The outcome was a beautiful new space loved by both clients and staff alike and no disruptions to the business and its clients’ base at any point in time.
