St George Mining has brought forward a drilling campaign designed to pierce two recently identified high priority nickel-copper sulphide targets at its Mt Alexander project in the north-eastern Goldfields of Western Australia. According to the company, both deeper seismic targets have a geophysical signature consistent with its Investigators prospect where shallower drilling recently returned a sizzling 8.49 metre hit grading 5.8 per cent nickel and 2.6 per cent copper.
The rig is scheduled to arrive on site in the first week of January, some three weeks earlier than previously scheduled.
Drilling will first tackle the ‘S1’ seismic target located down-dip from Investigators and within the same structure that hosts nickel-copper sulphide mineralisation drilled out at the prospect.
Other serious intercepts recently returned at Investigators include 7.86m going 5.7 per cent nickel and 2.1 per cent copper from 184m and 8.40m at 2.0 per cent nickel and 1.0 per cent copper from 199m.
S1 sits beneath Investigators at about 800m below surface and is modelled to cover a 450m dip-extent.
Investigators lies along the mineral rich Cathedrals Belt located within St George’s Mt Alexander project. It represents one of several nickel-copper prospects drilled out by the company along 5.5 kilometres of strike at Cathedrals Belt.
St George also plans to test the ‘S2’ target situated in the underexplored Transists Belt structure to the north of Cathedrals Belt. S2 is modelled with a dip-extent of 400m and lies 350m below surface.
Notably, previous shallow drilling by the company at the Transists Belt intercepted ultramafic rocks highlighting the potential for S2 to host mineralisation at depth.
According to the company, Transists Belt shows similarities to Cathedrals Belt.
Both S1 and S2 are located within St George’s 100 per cent owned tenure.
St George identified the two nickel-copper sulphide targets following interpretation of recently acquired seismic data for Mt Alexander. The company believes the deep-lying structures could potentially host a large mineral system.
Further modelling of the seismic data could light up additional targets for testing in the upcoming drill campaign, according to the company.
St George Mining Executive Chairman, John Prineas said: “We are delighted to be able to bring forward the start date for the 2022 diamond drill programme at Mt Alexander.
S1 and S2 are excellent targets for significant nickel-copper sulphide mineralisation, and we do not want to waste any time in drilling these targets.”
St George could be in for a fruitful start to the new year if its hunt for deeper nickel-copper sulphides at Mt Alexander hits a bullseye.
