Western Australian Liberal Slade Brockman has been sworn in as the new Senate president.
House of Representatives Speaker Tony Smith will step down on November 22 to serve out the rest of the parliamentary term as a Liberal backbencher.
The opposition has bypassed the state government and today written directly to the prime minister to formally outline its request for a royal commission into The Perth Mint.
The latest round of Liberal Party WA preselection nominations closed today, with a number of prominent candidates raising their hands to contest the state and federal upper houses.
Analysis: The political fallout has continued from Tanya Plibersek’s shock ruling against a tailings dam at Regis Resources’ McPhillamys gold project in NSW, formally revealed on Monday.
