In August 2020, Dr Robert Solomon became the first Professor of Practice in Mining Automation and Data Analysis at the Western Australian School of Mines in Kalgoorlie. He will lead and implement research initiatives, foster industry collaborations, shape undergraduate curriculum, and encourage the expansion of conceptual and practical boundaries of applied data science in the minerals industry. The position is a partnership between Curtin University and Fortescue Metals Group where Mr Solomon is the operations improvement manager, leading a team that is looking into the operational efficiency of the company’s autonomous mining operations using data sets and advanced analytics. Mr Solomon has been with Fortescue since October 2011 and was previously with BHP and Rio Tinto.
