Tough times for a polarising premier
From council amalgamations to Elizabeth Quay, power prices to ballooning debt, Colin Barnett faces criticism whichever way he turns.

WA potatoes grow in a unique regulatory climate.
An industry consortium led by members of the Chamber of Fruit and Vegetable Industries in WA has been selected as the preferred bidder for Market City, putting the state government a step closer to its first major asset sale.
The state government has completed the first in a series of planned asset sales, announcing that it has concluded negotiations with an industry consortium to purchase the Perth Market Authority’s Market City.
Former Skilled Group executive David Timmel has been appointed to the top job at Perth Markets, the newly formed company that has acquired the Perth Market Authority’s Market City.
Two new directors have been appointed to Perth Markets, with Frank Romano replacing his former colleague Nick Tana on the board.
Perth Markets will begin a fresh search for a chief executive to replace David Timmel, who has stepped down after just six months in the role.
Former Premier Colin Barnett has called time on a nearly three decade parliamentary career, which included leading the Liberal Party to a surprise victory in 2008, and heading a government which increased social support spending and invested substantially in infrastructure.
Whether as a stepping stone to higher duties or a role post-politics, local government provides an opportunity to serve.
Local government reform is finally on track in WA, but some observers remain unconvinced what’s on offer is bold enough.
