Meredith Hammat has a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Politics and Industrial Relations, and a Masters in Labor and Industrial Relations from the University of Western Australia.
She was the assistant branch secretary at the Australian Services Union from 1995 to 2012.
Ms Hammat became a Labor member of the Western Australian Legislative Assembly at the 2021 state election, representing Mirrabooka.
In the 2022 cabinet reshuffle, she became a parliamentary secretary to Dr Tony Buti, the Minister for Education; Aboriginal Affairs; Citizenship and Multicultural Interests under the McGowan government. Following the resignation of Mr McGowan in June 2023, Ms Shaw became the Parliamentary Secretary to Rita Saffioti (Deputy Premier, Treasurer, Minister for Transport & Tourism) and Dr Tony Buti (Minister for Education; Aboriginal Affairs; Citizenship and Multicultural Interests) under the Cook government.
