Mathias Cormann was a Federal Senate Member for Western Australia with the Liberal Party of Australia. He entered the Senate in 2007. In September 2015, Mr Cormann was promoted to deputy leader of the Government in the Senate, and was the Special Minister of State from February to July 2016 after acting in the role since December 2015. From 2017 to 2018, Mr Cormann was the leader of the Government in the Senate and vice president of the Executive Council. He has been the Minister for Finance since 2013 in the Abbott, Turnbull & Morrison Governments; and was Australia's longest serving finance minister when he retired from politics.
Mr Cormann stepped away from politics in October 2020 to focus on running for the position of secretary-general of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. He was appointed to the position effective June 2021, and is the first man from the Asia Pacific region to hold the position.
