Johan van Jaarsveld has been with BHP since 2016, initially as group portfolio strategy and development officer before being appointed to a newly created role of chief development officer in August 2020. Prior to BHP, Mr van Jaarsveld was the senior vice president of business development at Barrick Gold in Toronto, and was managing director of Goldman Sachs and Blackstone Group in Hong Kong. His work experience includes natural resources merger and capital markets advisory, project and corporate financing, investment evaluation, joint venture and contract negotiations. Early in his career he researched, developed and commercialised a mineral-based environmental technology. Mr van Jaarsveld holds a Bachelors degree in Chemical Engineering and Extractive Metallurgy, a Masters in Finance, and a PhD in Minerals Process Engineering.
