Brandon Craig will take charge of BHP's Western Australian iron ore operations, after working at the company for more than 20 years.
Over the past two decades, Mr Craig has held leadership roles in maintenance, marketing, human resources and operations management and most recently worked as vice president of BHP’s Maintenance and Engineering Centre of Excellence.
Mr Craig will start as Western Australia iron ore asset president on October 1, 2020.
Acting WA iron ore asset vice president Tim Day will transition to Mr Craig’s previous role and will be vice president of the Maintenance and Engineering Centre of Excellence.
Mr Day has worked at BHP since 2008 on projects including Peak Downs, Jimblebar and South Flank.
BHP president minerals Australia Edgar Basto said Mr Craig and Mr Day would bring a wealth of experience and expertise to their new roles.
“In the role of vice president of the Maintenance and Engineering Centre of Excellence, Brandon significantly improved the integrity and quality of BHP’s maintenance strategy,” Mr Basto said.
“He also streamlined planning and performance systems for our frontline and built teams that strengthened and diversified BHP’s capability.”
Mr Day has been acting in the role since Mr Basto, who held the position from 2016, was appointed acting president minerals Australia late last year.
Mr Basto said Mr Day had done an outstanding job.
“He has extensive experience in the resources industry spanning iron ore and coal operations, new mine construction and site commissioning, including leading the South Flank project, and General Manager Jimblebar for more than five years,” Mr Basto said.
“I would like to personally thank Tim for his management of the WAIO portfolio during this very challenging COVID-19 period.
“He has shown exceptional leadership in the prioritisation of the health and safety of our people, and the wider Western Australian community.”
The announcement comes as BHP makes changes to its global executive leadership team, including creating two new roles, chief technical officer and chief development officer.
BHP acting chief technology officer Ragnar Udd will become president minerals Americas.
Caroline Cox will become chief external affairs officer, after working as the company’s group general counsel and company secretary.
Laura Tyler, who serves as BHP’s chief geoscientist, has been appointed to the newly-created role of chief technical officer.
BHP group portfolio strategy and development officer Johan van Jaarsveld has been appointed chief development officer, which is also a new role.
The new appointees will join Mr Basto, chief financial officer David Lamont (who starts on December 1, 2020), president petroleum Geraldine Slattery, chief commercial officer Vandita Pant and chief people officer Athalie Williams on the executive leadership team.
