Globe Metals & Mining has appointed a full time Africa-based CEO to develop its Kanyika Project in Malawi, promoting Grant Hudson from General Manager - Corporate Services to run the aspiring niobium and tantalum miner. Long serving managing director Alistair Stephens will become a senior adviser to the Board and Executive Management Team that Globe said would allow for a smooth transfer of responsibilities.

Globe Metals and Mining is one step closer to sealing a mining development deal for its Kanyika niobium project with the Malawi Government after a review and recommendation for approval by a steering committee. The company says it has received confirmation from the Malawi Ministry of Mining that negotiations and the review of the draft agreement have been completed. Globe is aiming to produce high-purity niobium pentoxide and tantalum at Kanyika.

Globe Metals and Mining is teaming up with industry partners to fine-tune the extractive technologies needed to treat high-purity niobium pentoxide and tantalum concentrates from its Kanyika project in Malawi. In addition to producing niobium and tantalum oxides, the company is investigating a second processing technology as it looks to open up the lucrative ferro-niobium market.

Globe Metals & Mining has ticked off a 10-tonne sample from its Kanyika niobium project as part of a plant feasibility study in Malawi. Management says it will be used to design a pilot plant, a testwork program and for commercial grade offtake samples. Globe recently became the first to sign a Mining Development Agreement with the Malawian Government for the advancement of its project.

Globe Metals & Mining’s plans for its Kanyika niobium project have received a vital boost with the Malawian Government backing its anticipated roll-out for substantial mine development and production. Management says representatives from the Malawian Government also recently visited the mine site and believes their support greatly enhances Globe’s efforts to increase the security of tenure for its mining licences.

Globe Metals & Mining has signed a non-binding term sheet with TCM Research, giving it exclusive use of the latter’s principal technology for processing niobium from the Kanyika project in Malawi. TCM has been selected to design the refinery process for the Kanyika concentrate and to determine the design parameters of a proposed refinery after carrying out metallurgical testwork on a sample.

Globe Metals & Mining has achieved metals extraction of more than 99 per cent on concentrates from its Kanyika niobium project in Malawi following a savvy decision to switch to vapour-chlorination technology. The company says the results validate its decision to move from high-cost, toxic, acid-based extraction and also highlight many other cost, processing, infrastructure, environmental, handling and ESG benefits.
