David Michael has been a Labor Party Member of the WA Legislative Assembly for Balcatta since 2017. He is the WA Parliament's first ever Australian/Finnish MP.
Mr Michael ran unsuccessfully as the Labor candidate for Churchlands in 2001 but in 2005, he became the youngest councillor (at the aged of 25) to serve at the City of Stirling and was deputy mayor from 2011 to 2013.
Since 2002, Mr Michael has worked as an advisor and researcher for a number of state Labor members.
He was appointed Cabinet Secretary under the McGowan government in March 2021. Following the resignation of Mr McGowan in June 2023, he was appointed the Minister for Ports, Local Government, Road Safety, and the Minister assisting the Minister for Transport under the Cook government. In a cabinet reshuffle in December 2023, Mr Michael replaced the Local Government portfolio with Mines and Petroleum.
