Net names into new domain

INDIVIDUALS have been able to register personal domain space in Australia for the first time this week.

Wholesale domain name supplier AusRegistry has released the id.au second-level domain name, which is for the exclusive use of individuals, joining com.au, org.au, asn.au and net.au.

The race has now begun between those of Australia’s John and Jane Citizens who are keen to snare their very own web domains.

AusRegistry has high hopes for the success of the id.au domain and believes it has the potential to be of major interest to many people.

“It’s a most exciting prospect … [and] we’ll definitely be pushing it as the flagship product,” AusRegistry managing director of sales and marketing Adrian Kinderis said.

AusRegistry has reduced the wholesale price of all five domains by more than half, and says it is possible to buy an id.au address for $30 for two years.

In December 2001, auDA, the .au Domain Administration, awarded AusRegistry the license to build and operate a new registry system in Australia for the .com.au, .net.au, .org.au, .asn.au and .id.au domain names. AusRegistry subsequently became the registry for domain names in .gov.au and .edu.au
