FIRST there were billboards. Then there were truck ads, taxi ads and even bus ads. Now there are scooter ads.
Scooter ads are 1.5 metre by one metre advertising hoardings on trailers towed behind Vespa scooters.
Local business Scooter Ads made its first public appearance last Friday and drew some strong responses.
While the concept is eye catching, whether its novelty will wear off remains to be seen.
Scooter Ads owner Martin Millington said the riders had stopped on Oxford Street for about 15 minutes and received two enquiries.
“One was from [real estate agent] Remax and the other from a men’s fashion retailer,” Mr Millington said.
“It’s an outdoor advertising campaign. We can tailor ad campaigns for events such as Australia Day or AFL matches or retail specials.
“We can also do brand advertising where the riders help out with promos.
“Say it was for a new product. We’d have the riders dressed in T-shirts advertising the manufacturer and handing out free samples.
“In addition to the posters, space is also available on the front and back of the trailer at no additional cost other than production.”
Mr Millington said the scooters attracted attention in their own right but worked more effectively when travelling in convoy.
He said he first got the idea while in Melbourne last year and, six months later the company was born.
The scooters are on the road for six-and-a half-hours a day, seven days a week. One of the main benefits of the scooters is their mobility compared with some of the other forms of mobile billboard advertising. And, being scooters, they are ideally suited to running through cafe strips and the CBD.
