PLANNING Minister John Day has released new inner-city development guidelines that will shape the city’s major projects, including the Northbridge Link and the Riverside developments.
Mr Day released the East Perth Redevelopment Authority’s scheme 2 and scheme 10 new development policies specifically designed to meet the needs of inner-city projects.
The guidelines affect EPRA’s entire redevelopment area, made up of six inner-city projects – The Link, Perth Cultural Centre, Riverside, New Northbridge, East Perth Power Station and Claisebrook village.
The scheme is based on six key principles of sustainable urban renewal: places for people; critical mass; quality design; diversity; connectivity; and environmental integrity.
A key feature of the scheme is to develop a wide range of housing options in inner-city Perth to create a critical mass of people, businesses and attractions to decrease urban sprawl.
Mr Day said in a statement released last week the scheme was an important step that encouraged a people-focused approach in creating public open spaces and urban environments, and the guidelines would improve the development application process.
“The new scheme and policies deliver the tools needed to continue the exciting work already underway so we can create a truly world-class city full of vibrant public spaces,” he said.
“Projects like The Link, the Perth Cultural Centre and New Northbridge are about opening our city up to welcome more people into it.”
