He was beaten by French swimmer Alain Bernard to claim the silver medal.
Meanwhile Stephanie Rice has claimed her third gold medal at the games in the women's 4x200m freestyle relay.
The team also set a world record time of seven minutes 44.31 seconds.
And Australian Brenton Rickard claimed a silver medal in the men's 200m breaststroke after qualifying fifth fastest.
