ORLANDO Wyndham senior winemaker Bernie Hichin showed the Jacobs Creek Riesling in June after it had only been in the bottle for about a week. It looked fantastic then and, after grabbing a bottle over the weekend it has, if anything, tweaked a little more soundly together.
I would recommend this as one of the best value white wines under $10. It was hard to believe Bernie Hichin that Orlando couldn’t source enough riesling to meet all its demands for this noble variety and I am led to believe that even Western Australian riesling fruit found its way over to Orlando’s winery.
This wine has received the full treatment. Only free-run juice is used and much of the fruit comes of mature vines in the Barossa and Clare valleys.
It’s a shame that nearly 70 per cent of this wine heads off to the export market, however it still leaves a sizeable chunk of the 300,000 cases for sensible punters to get hold of here in the domestic market.
Jacobs Creek Riesling 2001 rrp $9.99 rating 17/20
Pale with a touch of green, the wine displays floral characters with citrus lemon/lime and hints of bath salt aromas. The palate has an enormous mouthfill with lime citrus and mineral undertones. The acidity is well integrated and shows finesse. The wine is lively and vibrant with a floral hint. The length of palate is long and dynamic. This is fair dinkum honest value for money.
