Western Australia is a step closer to a state-of-the-art performing arts venue with today's call for tenders for the main construction contract.
Culture and Arts Minister Sheila McHale said the venue, designed by award-winning Kerry Hill Architects, was a uniquely exciting project for the people of Perth.
"This is the first time a State Government has constructed a purpose-built State theatre in Perth," Ms McHale said.
"More than 70 experts have been involved in the venue's design over the past 18 months and it's now up to the successful contractor to turn their vision into reality."
The Minister said forward works, including demolition, excavation and other work to prepare the site for the main construction, were expected to be completed shortly.
"Building a theatre is a very specialised and complex task," she said.
"Comprehensive briefings will be held during the tender period to assist potential contractors in understanding the complexities of the project."
The venue, to be built on the corner of Roe and William Streets in Northbridge, will include:
- a 575 seat main theatre;
- a flexible 200 seat performance studio;
- rehearsal spaces, back of house services and public amenities;
- an outdoor multi-purpose space; and
- upgrades to the William Street heritage buildings adjacent to the venue.
"I am committed to delivering a building that will serve Perth for the next 100 years," Ms McHale said.
"The Carpenter Government is creating culture and arts infrastructure for all Western Australians."
