As the Easter break approaches I thought it appropriate to take a look at reeling in some of the best seafood outlets in Perth.
As the Easter break approaches I thought it appropriate to take a look at reeling in some of the best seafood outlets in Perth.
Not all of us are born to cast out a line, dive under the ledges or drop in the pots.
I much prefer to use other sources when landing the seafood catch for lunch or dinner.
The last time I went fishing the only thing I managed to catch was a frozen pike placed on my hook while I was off leading the burleying brigade.
So to seek out the places that provide Perth with its jewels of the aquatic life means I keep my feet firmly on shore and need only concern myself with the experience of how best to prepare and cook my seafood delight.
Most of the outlets I spoke to tell you that the styles of seafood purchased are based on tradition. Most people regardless of their religious belief will eat some form of seafood over the Easter break.
However it tends not to be a lavish affair and choices are kept quite simple.
Shellfish take a back seat role for a few days as most people fill up young bunnies with an assortment of mainly scale fish such as snapper and coral trout.
You are able to buy seafood from a number of outlets up and down our coast but it is the specialist outlets that are able to provide the range and quality you expect living on the waters edge.
Just like seeking out a very good butcher who will prepare to your needs and carry a wide range of quality meats, your seafood specialty outlet needs to provide that same professionalism.
We are pretty lucky here in Perth to have several specialty outlets to meet our demand for fresh fish and shellfish.
Those outlets that concentrate on Seafood and only seafood tend to provide you with what you expect.
Kailis Bros has been a well-respected fishmonger for more than 70 years. Its first retail store was at 131 Barrack Street, Perth. Kailis Bros is now one of the largest seafood operations in Australia, with not only retail and wholesale outlets, but also both importing and exporting divisions.
The retail outlets include the Saturday market at Canning Vale, which is open for business as you are leaving the nightclub on Saturday morning around 6am.As you would imagine, you’re not going to get fish much fresher if you pop out to the markets.
The prices are a little better and you can take your pick a little easier.
Kailis Bros other retail outlet is the very impressive Leederville store, which is seafood heaven. You can find just about anything you want and if you can’t find it the staff there will do their best to get it in for you.
The other nifty thing they can do is the packaging of your catch of the day for you if you are flying over to the eastern states, even overseas.
The thought of arriving in London with a couple of lobsters tucked under your arm could be quite appealing given the right occasion.
With the state of the dollar, it might be worth taking a boxful over, as they would probably bring a better return.
The range is simply amazing and with Easter being a traditional time, when scale fish are usually chosen, the manager explained that the pick of the fish were Red Emperor, Pink Snapper and Coral Trout.
The tropical fish, he said, were ripe for picking in autumn and spring as the climate changes occurred in the water as well as on land.
Another Easter delight for those with a bit of English blood is smoked cod, not my favourite but those Poms are a different breed.
Sealanes fresh seafood market in Fremantle has sold seafood since 1922, and now has an enormous operation that provides fresh seafood for retail and wholesale clients.
Its retail arm is much like Kailis Bros in its aim to provide a complete quality service, which includes preparing your selection to your requirements. Again it is scale fish that will fill the displays at Sealanes during the Easter period.
In case you get stuck in the pub next Thursday night, it will be open on Good Friday for any last-minute panic situations.
Another of the outlets that you should consider is a mobile service called West Coast Seafood Distributors which has delivered door to door since 1990, and will tell you customers live as far away as Mukinbuddin.
West Coast seafood will deliver door to door. Friday afternoon drinks could take on a whole new meaning if you get a dozen oysters delivered.
You name it we got it, is part of the message that they give out, and if they don’t have it in stock they will find it for you within a few days. It is a great idea for the busy corporate sector and friends I know who have used the service say that the quality of the produce is first rate.
Jessica’s Seafood restaurant ex-head chef Justin says that much of the seafood used comes from Kailis Bros and the quality and range is pretty hard to beat.Jessica’s tends to find Jew fish very popular over this period in good supply and quality.
