AMP Capital’s $150 million high-rise apartment complex has been given development approval.
AMP Capital’s $150 million high-rise apartment complex in Karrinyup has been given development approval, despite council recommending against the project.
The proposal, comprising 270 dwellings and commercial tenancies across three towers of nine, 15 and 24 storeys and more than 600 parking bays on Karrinyup Road, has drawn criticism from the community and City of Stirling.
Earlier this month, the council recommended JDAP refuse the development on the grounds that it constituted an overdevelopment of the site.
But planners today gave the project development approval, with some operational conditions.
The conditions do not affect the bulk or scale of the development.
AMP Capital WA Divisional Investment and Development Manager Scott Nugent said the approval of the residential development was in line with the State Government’s planning policy.
“Karrinyup will be a genuine mixed-use community, offering a place to live, relax, socialise, shop, dine and enjoy unique experiences,” he said.
“Our residents will benefit from having a community hub right on their doorstep with convenience and connectivity not before experienced in Perth.”
City of Stirling Mayor Mark Irwin said he was disappointed in the JDAP decision, saying it ignored community views.
The City's planning and development director Stevan Rodic said the project was not compatible with its setting and would negatively impact the amenity of the local commnuity.
AMP Capital has already started work on a $75 million Karrinyup apartment complex with property developer Blackburne, made up of 94 dwellings.
Both apartment buildings will be near AMP Capital’s $800 million Karrinyup Shopping Centre development, expected to be complete next month.
