DUG makes hydrogen play

ASX-listed DUG Technology is filing patents for a hydrogen energy storage system which it hopes to use to support a supercomputer project in Geraldton.

The company said it would use renewables to generate at the $5 million project, backed up by a hydrogen energy storage system.

Combined, it would lead to a levelized cost of energy of 13 cents per kilowatt hour.

DUG is planning a 200 petaflop supercomputer in Geraldton, almost 10 times the capacity of its Bruce supercomputer in Kings Park.

DUG chief engineer Mark Lommers said low-cost hydrogen energy storage technology will be a solution to the intermittency of traditional renewable generation.

“These advances complement our innovative approach to data centre cooling systems to deliver the world’s most climate friendly (high performance computing),” he said.

DUG managing director Matthew Lamont said the green-technology solutions that help in reconciling both environmental and economic agendas are today’s mandate to transition to a sustainable future.

DUG’s shares were up by 4.46 per cent to $1.22 at time of writing.
