Local builder wins $16m Albany project

Construction company Wauters has secured the works to build Western Power's new $16 million energy depot.

The Albany facility will replace the existing 45-year-old depot on Kelly Street, and is intended to improve both safety for employees and operational efficiencies.

It will also be the central hub for energy services within the Great Southern region, Energy Minister Bill Johnston said.

Construction work will begin in May, with Wauters expected to employ about 70 people.

Premier Mark McGowan said the new facility was a significant investment in the region and would help keep Western Power in public hands.

It forms part of Western Power’s depot modernisation program, which also includes the $50 million Forrestdale hub currently being built by Kewdale-based ADCO.

That depot is expected to open in early 2022.
