BMD, Georgiou in line for $215m Mitchell Fwy project

The state government has named BMD Construction and Georgiou Group as the preferred proponents to extend Mitchell Freeway.

Under the $215 million project, the freeway will be extended by 5.6 kilometres from Hester Avenue in Clarkson to Romeo Road, in Alkimos.

It is jointly funded by both the federal and state governments.

An extension is expected to reduce travel times on the freeway, as well as improve safety and connectivity for commuters and local residents.

BMD and Georgiou – the Mitchell Extension Joint Venture (MJEV) – secured preferred contractor status ahead of a consortium comprising NRW Contracting and WBHO Infrastructure (H2R).

A final contract will likely be awarded in the coming weeks, with work to begin early next year.

The project is expected to support 1,200 jobs.

Federal Member for Pearce Christian Porter said the project was important in addressing population growth in the northern suburbs.

“It’s vital we deliver these much needed infrastructure upgrades now,” he said.

State Member for Butler John Quigley said the extension would make a huge difference for local residents.

The Mitchell Freeway extension is one of the 11 major road projects being fast-tracked in WA, Transport Minister Rita Saffioti said.

BMD and Georgiou, both based in Perth, also recently secured work on the state government’s $400 million Tonkin Gap project, which is expected to fix a major bottleneck on Tonkin Highway.

The companies won the work as part of the Tonkin Alliance, which also includes Perth companies WA Limestone, BG&E and GHD.
