Anghie elected deputy mayor

Sandy Anghie has been sworn in as deputy mayor of the City of Perth at a special council meeting this morning.

Ms Anghie, who had also campaigned for lord mayor, was elected to council on Saturday with 8 per cent of the vote, finishing first in a 27-candidate field.

Three candidates had nominated for deputy mayor, with Liam Gobbert and Catherine Lezer unsuccessful in their bid for the position.

Rebecca Gordon had spoken in favour of Mr Gobbert's nomination, arguing his previous experience as a deputy mayor at the City of Joondalup equipped him for the role.

Ms Anghie was ultimately successful and received five votes in favour of her appointment.

While she will serve a three-year term on council, Ms Anghie's appointment as deputy mayor will last until another election for four council seats is held in October of next year.

Lord Mayor Basil Zempilas congratulated Ms Anghie on her win after today's meeting.

“We have an opportunity to provide strong leadership for our great city," he said.

"I know we will have a productive time together working with our CEO and the entire city administration to ensure a vibrant, connected and progressive Perth."
