Perth gets new medical research hub

The state government has committed $13.3 million to establish a medical research centre in Perth.

The ‘Synapse 74’ innovation hub, a 2017 state election commitment, will be located within walking distance of the Royal Perth Hospital (RPH) campus and will provide close interaction between clinicians, patients, innovators and innovation funders.

Startups and established organisations will use the shared working spaces to come together on health-related concepts, the state government said.

Health Minister Roger Cook said the hub would boost WA’s “innovation ecosystem”.

“It is vital that all Western Australians can access state-of-the-art healthcare and WA – despite our geographical isolation – continues its reputation for leading global research and technology,” he said.

“Capitalising on its exceptional health care and research capability and its location as Perth’s only inner-city healthcare precinct, RPH is well placed to host a dynamic hub for innovation in healthcare.”

Mr Cook said the hub – through increased opportunities for health innovation – would provide sustainable and world-leading healthcare, as well as boost WA jobs.

Construction of the hub is expected to start late next year.
