State govt announces $7m in road upgrades

A busy Cockburn intersection is set to benefit from $7 million worth of road upgrades, targeting improved safety for cyclists and pedestrians.

The upgrade will occur at the intersection of Stock Road and Beeliar Drive in the City of Cockburn and will include new lanes, extended turning pockets, upgrades to traffic signals and street lighting, as well as installation of safety barriers.

The project is being funded by the state government’s Metropolitan Intersection Crashes Program.

Road Safety Minister Michelle Roberts said the work, to begin later this year, would improve the safety and experience of all road users.

“The improvements are being funded through the Road Trauma Trust Account, which collects 100 per cent of its funds from speed and red light camera infringements,” she said.

“These are exactly the sorts of projects this fund was set up for – initiatives which improve road safety outcomes and help prevent the types of crashes which cause serious injury or death.”

The upgrades, due to start by April next year, complement a range of other major transport projects under way in Perth’s southern suburbs, including the widening of Kwinana Freeway, and construction of the North Lake Road bridge and Thornlie-Cockburn train line connection.
