Peel Health Campus upgrades to resume

Upgrades to the emergency department at Peel Health Campus will resume later this month, with the works awarded to Canning Vale-based contractor Devlyn Constructions.

The project forms part of the state government’s $10 million funding for the campus, with the upgrades intended to improve patient flow as well as enhance comfort and privacy.

The project, which was placed on hold due to COVID-19, has been brought forward to June 22 after the state government anticipated a likely restart in October.

Health Minister Roger Cook said now was an appropriate time to resume the work, given the Western Australia's improved situation around the coronavirus outbreak.

The upgrades will include a new fast-track area and holding bays, additional beds to the short-stay unit and redesign of the emergency waiting room.

Peel Health Campus will also gain an expanded car park, overhauled nurse call system and increased security.

Mr Cook said the work would provide a boost for the local community, with Devlyn Constructions estimated to employ 100 subcontractors, including from the Peel region.

“The project is also providing work for the civil and building construction industries, which will help boost the local economy, which is an important step in WA's recovery from COVID-19,” he said.

The announcement comes as WA recorded one new coronavirus case overnight, bringing the state’s total to 592.

The new case is an overseas traveller in his 30s, who is currently in hotel quarantine. Contact tracing is under way.
