Mackerel to operate Karijini retreat

Mackerel Islands will begin managing Karijini Eco Retreat as of next month, with the Pilbara-based operator taking over operations of the Gumala Enterprises-owned facility.

Gumala, a diversified entity with interests in mining, tourism and facilities management, built the retreat in 2007.

Mackerel Islands, which was founded in 1969 and operates facilities on the titular islands 22km from the shores of Onslow in Western Australia’s north, has established subsidiary Karijini Adventures to directly oversee management of the retreat.

Mackerel Islands chief executive Drew Norrish said he was thrilled to work with Gumala Enterprises and that Karijini Eco Retreat complemented the company’s existing portfolio of facilities.

“This next chapter in Karijini Eco Retreat’s 14-year history will be exciting in terms of potential as we further develop the market,” he said.

Gumala chief executive Tim Larkin said the business was pleased to appoint Mackerel Islands as the manager of Karijini Eco Retreat.

“Mackerel Islands will bring a new energy to the marketing and management of such an iconic eco-retreat,” he said.
