Densford wins $6.4m contract

Osborne Park-based Densford Civil has been awarded a $6.4 million contract for safety improvement works along the South Coast Highway in Albany.

The project involves the reconstruction and widening of a 2.3-kilometre section of the highway between Killarney Road and Montgomery’s Winery.

The works also include the construction of a westbound passing lane and upgrades to the Mead Road intersection.

Works are expected to begin this month and be completed by May.

The project marks the start of the state government’s $30 million upgrade to South Coast Highway between Albany and Jerramungup.

Premier Mark McGowan said one of his government’s top priorities was fixing regional roads.

“Locals have held concerns over the safety of South Coast Highway for a long time, and our planned upgrades will address these issues,” Mr McGowan said in a statement.

“It will also create better freight links for the region and improve connection to tourism opportunities for locals and tourists.”

South Coast Highway is a major freight transport corridor servicing the ports at Albany and Esperance.

According to the government, the section that is part of the $30 million carries on average 1,600 vehicles per day, of which 20.4 per cent are heavy vehicles.
