Dampier Port to export ammonium

Pilbara Ports Authority has received regulatory approval to support shipping ammonium nitrate through the Port of Dampier.

The Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety has issued the authority with a special license for handling ammonium nitrate.

The license allows the shipment of 3,600 metric tons of ammonium nitrate with the opportunity to increase export volumes in the future.

“The introduction of ammonium nitrate exports presents a new trade opportunity through the Port of Dampier,” Harbourmaster captain Vikas Bangia said.

Ammonium nitrate is the main component of explosives used by the mining, quarrying and construction industries, as well as being a primary ingredient in fertilisers.

Yara International operates a liquid ammonia plant on the Burrup peninsula and an adjoining technical ammonium nitrate plant.
