Retail is a difficult game to stick around in, but there are a handful of retailers in Perth that have stood the test of time and remain operating in their original location.
The historic port city of Fremantle is home to Perth’s oldest retail location still operating in its original spot – the Fremantle Markets, which was built in 1897.
Fremantle is also home to the city’s oldest barber, Norm Wrightson’s Hairway, which has been operating in the same spot since 1933.
Also in Freo is Perth’s longest-running bottle shop – the Fremantle Doctor Liquor Store on Arundel Street – having been established as Oceania Trading Exchange in 1928.
At the fishing boat harbour, Fremantle can also claim the city’s oldest shop selling fish and chips in Cicerellos, however its original building, which had been in place since the late 1950s was demolished and replaced in 1996.
Northbridge is home to a pair of iconic retailers still housed in their original digs. Spice Merchant Kakulas Bros has been at its William Street store since 1929, while the popular Re Store has been operating out of Lake Street since 1936.
