The state government is seeking proposals to develop up to 35,000 square metres of office space in the City of Stirling to house the Department of Commerce.
Finance Minister Simon O’Brien today announced the plan, which is the government’s next step in its long-term planning strategy, Directions 2031 and Beyond.
The state government is looking to save up to $25 million a year by shifting office accommodation from the inner city to suburban locations.
“This is consistent with the objective to reduce long-term office accommodation costs, while at the same time improving the quality and access to state government services,” Mr O’Brien said in a statement.
“This long-term strategic planning will be used to inform the development of a business case, which will be considered by government in 2013.”
Mr O’Brien said a key focus of the expressions of interest process would be on sustainable office solutions.
In July, Mr O’Brien said the government was expanding its office consolidation plan to the regions, with Mandurah, Busselton and Northam the first country towns to be included in the cost-saving initiative.
The plan was first launched in 2010, when 5,000 public servants from 18 locations and 23 agencies were shifted into new facilities in Perth, West Perth, East Perth and Osborne Park.
In June Mr O’Brien announced that staff would move from approximately 80,000 square metres of office space in the CBD to Murdoch, Stirling and Fremantle.
