A PHOTOGRAPHY feature commemorating the Bali bombings for Melbourne’s The Age newspaper has earned Perth photographer Tony McDonough a WA photography award.
The series of photos (two of which are featured, left) were taken for an anniversary commemorative edition that appeared in The Age last October.
The shots won the best picture story award at the 50th annual WA Press Photographer of the Year Awards.
Photographing the Bali bomb victims series was a difficult assignment, according to Mr McDonough.
“One of the things they [The Age] thought was they should really put together a commemorative for the survivors and for the families,” he said.
“It was difficult because a lot of the people were still going through the grieving process and I heard a lot of their stories.”
One photograph shows a mother cupping her daughter’s driver’s licence in her hands.
“She lost two daughters,” Mr McDonough said.
“I was leaving and she brought out this bag with melted keys and a wallet and her licence. She said ‘this is what they sent back of my daughter’.”
Mr McDonough also won an award for best news feature picture.
The photo of WA’s only truffle farmer (right) was printed in Scoop Magazine, along with its story on the truffle farm.
The West Australian’s Barry Baker won the WA Press Photographer of the Year award. Mr Baker also won best sport news photograph. Other category winners included: Ian Cugley from The Sunday Times; Lee Griffith from The West Australian; Ken Maley from The West Australian; Andrew Ritchie from Community Newspapers; and Tracey Neamy from The Kalgoorlie Miner.
