John Van Der Wielen has been managing risk for his entire career, working at the highest levels of the insurance and wealth management sectors in Australia and Europe before coming back home to run HBF.

Transitioning from executive roles, he has taken on one of the biggest challenges in corporate Australia. As chair of Crown’s WA operations, Mr Van Der Wielen is working with new owners Blackstone to restore the group’s reputation, guiding the recalibration of the Crown hospitality and casino business in Perth after the shocking Royal Commission findings.

On top of that major job, he is also chairing the WA government’s $1.8bn Future Health Research and Innovation Fund, leading the state’s efforts to diversify and commercialise our success in the field of medical research.
