Tarun Weeramanthri

Tarun Weeramanthri AM has experience in diverse aspects of public health for 30 years including public health research, policy and practice in the prevention of common chronic diseases, and addressing Aboriginal health gaps.

He has been in clinical practice from 1984 to 2007, including 15 years as a part-time specialist general physician with a particular focus on outreach to Aboriginal communities.

Mr Weeramanthri is also experienced in disaster coordination and response in the Northern Territory and WA. He worked for the World Health Organisation in 2015 to coordinate foreign medical teams in Sierra Leone, and in 2017 in a trauma coordination role in Iraq. He also led an AUSMAT Forward Support Team to Papua New Guinea in 2018.

Mr Weeramanthri is the recipient of a Sidney Sax Medal in 2014, the highest award given by the Public Health Association of Australia.

He is the joint specialty chief editor of international open access journal, Frontiers in Public Health Policy, since its launch in 2015. He is also an adjunct professor in the School of Population and Global Health at the University of Western Australia.

In June 2022, Mr Weeramanthri was awarded a Member of the Order of Australia for significant service to public health administration.
